In jener Arbeit zeigt Lijphart f?r diese L?nder eine Vielzahl von Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschieden bez?glich der von ihm formulierten Konkordanzdemokratie beg?nstigenden Faktoren und der Anwendung der konkordanzdemokratischen Prinzipien auf. Er kommt zu dem Schluss, dass in Israel nicht alle konkordanzdemokratischen Prinzipien Anwendung fanden; daher die Bezeichnung Israels als Halb-Konkordanzdemokratie. ＜p＞Reference is made to a custom prevalent in northern India of employing the family barber to select the boys and girls to be married, it being considered too trivial and humiliating an act for the parents to attend to. In pronouncing such a custom ludicrous and outrageous we must not forget that not much more than a century ago an English thinker, Samuel Johnson, expressed the opinion that marriages might as well be arranged by the Lord Chancellor without consulting the parties concerned. Schopenhauer had, indeed, reason to claim that it had remained for him to discover the significance and importance of love. His ideas on the relations between love, youth, health, and beauty opened up a new vista of thought; yet it was limited, because the question of heredity was only just beginning to be understood, and the theory of evolution, which has revolutionized all science, had not yet appeared on the horizon. The new science of anthropology, with its various branches, including sociology, ethnology, and comparative psychology, has within the last two or three decades brought together and discussed an immense number of facts relating to man in his various stages of developmentーsavagery, barbarism, semi-civilization, and civilization. Monographs have appeared in great numbers on various customs and institutions, including marriage, which has been discussed in several exhaustive volumes. Love alone has remained to be specially considered from an evolutionary point of view. My own book, Romantic Love and Personal Beauty, which appeared in 1887, did indeed touch upon this question, but very briefly, inasmuch as its subject, as the title indicates, was modern romantic love. A book on such a subject was naturally and easily written virginibus puerisque; whereas the present volume, being concerned chiefly with the love-affairs of savages and barbarians, could not possibly have been subjected to the same restrictions. Care has been taken, however, to exclude anything that might offend a healthy taste. If it has been necessary in some chapters to multiply unpleasant facts, the reader must blame the sentimentalists who have so persistently whitewashed the savages that it has become necessary, in the interest of truth, to show them in their real colors. I have indeed been tempted to give my book the sub-title “A Vindication of Civilization” against the misrepresentations of these sentimentalists who try to create the impression that savages owe all their depravity to contact with whites, having been originally spotless angels. ＜p＞Of all the rhetorical commonplaces in literature and conversation, none is more frequently repeated than the assertion that Love, as depicted in a thousand novels and poems every year, has existed at all times, and in every country, immutable as the mountains and the stars. Only a few months ago one of the leading German writers of the period, Ernst Eckstein, wrote an essay in which he endeavoured to prove that not only was Love as felt by the ancient Romans the same as modern Love, but that it was identical with the modern sentiment even in its minutest details and manifestations. He based this bold inference on the fact that in Ovid’s Ars Amoris directions are given to the men regarding certain tricks of gallantryーsuch as dusting the adored one’s seat at the circus, fanning her, applauding her favourites, and drinking from the cup where it was touched by her lips. Curious and interesting these hints are, no doubt. But a closer examination of Roman literature and manners shows that Dr. Eckstein has been guilty of the common blunder of generalising from a single instance. Gallantry is one of the essential traits of modern Love; and far from having been a common practice in ancient Rome, the interest of Ovid’s remarks lies in the fact that they give us the first instance on record of an attempt at gallant behaviour on the part of the men; as will be shown in detail in the chapter on Roman Love. And as with Gallantry, so with the other traits which make up the group of emotions known to us as Love. We look for them in vain among modern savages, in vain among the ancient civilised nations. Romantic Love is a modern sentiment, less than a thousand years old. Conjugal Love is, indeed, often celebrated by Greek, Hebrew, and other ancient writers, but regarding Romanticーor pre-matrimonialーLove (which alone forms the theme of our novelists), they are silent. The Bible takes no account of it, and although Greek literature and mythology seem at first sight to abound in allusions to it, critical analysis shows that the reference never is to Love as we understand it. Greek Love, as will be shown hereafter, was a peculiar mixture of friendship and passion, differing widely from the modern sentiment of Love. It is because among the Romans the position of woman was somewhat more elevated and modern than among the Greeks, that we find in Roman literature a vague foreshadowing of some of the elements of modern Love. In the Dark Ages there is a relapse. The germs of Love could not flourish in a period when women were kept in brutal subjection by the men, and their minds refused all nourishment and refinement. The Troubadours of Italy and France proved useful champions of woman, as did the German Minnesingers, by teaching the medi?val military man to look upon her with sentiments of respect and adoration. Yet their conduct rarely harmonised with their preaching; and the cause of Romantic Love gained little by their poetic effusions, which were almost invariably addressed to married women. Not till Dante’s Vita Nuova appeared was the gospel of modern Loveーthe romantic adoration of a maiden by a youthー revealed for the first time in definite language. Genius, however, is always in advance of its age, in emotions as well as in thoughts; and the feelings experienced by Dante were obviously not shared by his contemporaries, who found them too subtle and sublimated for their comprehension. And, in fact, they were too ethereal to quite correspond with reality. The strings of Dante’s lyre were strung too high, and touched by his magic hand, gave forth harmonic overtones too celestial for mundane ears to hear. It remained for Shakspere to combine the idealism with the realism of Love in proper proportions. Erst durch die Einf?hrung der allgemeinen Schulpflicht um 1800 wurde Frauen zumindest das Recht auf 'Grundbildung' gew?hrt (vgl. Richter 1996). Allerdings konnte zu diesem Zeitpunkt noch nicht von gleichberechtigten Bildungschancen von Frauen und M?nnern gesprochen werden, denn die Bildung von M?dchen und Jungen wurde strikt nach Geschlechtern getrennt und die Lehrpl?ne unterschieden sich. So war es den M?dchen vorbehalten, beispielsweise am Hauswirtschaftsunterricht teilzunehmen, wohingegen die Jungen den Werkunterricht besuchten. Gr?nde daf?r lagen zum Teil in der gesellschaftlichen Stellung der Frauen, deren Lebensbereiche haupts?chlich auf die Familie beschr?nkt waren. Diese Geschlechterrollentypisierung wurde in Deutschland erst in den sechziger Jahren mit der Einf?hrung der Koedukation beseitigt und schlug sich zu Beginn der siebziger Jahre auch endg?ltig in den Lehrpl?nen nieder (vgl. Srocke, B. 1989; Richter, S. 1996). Mit der Einf?hrung der Koedukation wurde also eine gewichtige Grundlage f?r die Chancengleichheit in der Bildungslaufbahn von Jungen und M?dchen geschaffen. Deshalb ist es umso verwunderlicher, dass es trotz dieser Chancengleichheit dennoch Geschlechterdifferenzen z. B. im mathematischen und naturwissen-schaftlichen Bereich gibt (vgl. Meuche 1997; Conrads 1992; Richter 1996). So werden in unserer Gesellschaft Naturwissenschaften und Technik nach wie vor als m?nnliche Dom?nen angesehen.
